The risk that comes with Germany’s much-needed personality hire of Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp has officially returned to management after being appointed head coach of Germany, taking over a national team desperate to recover from another disappointing World Cup campaign.
The former Liverpool manager replaces Julian Nagelsmann following Germany's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The German Football Association (DFB – German Football Association) has handed Klopp a contract running through the 2030 World Cup, placing him in charge of rebuilding one of football's most successful nations after years of underachievement.
Klopp inherits a team that has struggled to recapture the success of its 2014 World Cup triumph. Germany has suffered a series of disappointing performances at major tournaments, including group-stage exits in previous World Cups and another painful elimination in 2026. His appointment is widely viewed as an attempt to restore confidence, identity and excitement around the national team.
Known for his energetic leadership and attacking football, Klopp built his reputation at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, winning multiple domestic titles, the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League. German football officials believe his experience, personality and ability to unite players make him the ideal candidate to lead the national team into UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
Speaking after his appointment, Klopp described the role as a tremendous honour and expressed his determination to reconnect the German public with its national team. He said he wants to build a side that reflects Germany's football identity while playing exciting, high-intensity football. After stepping away from club management and working with Red Bull, Klopp now faces what many believe is the biggest rebuilding mission of his coaching career.
