AfD hits 30% in Insa poll, Union falls to 18%

The AfD has reached 30 percent in a nationwide Insa poll for the first time, while the CDU/CSU Union of Chancellor Friedrich Merz has fallen to 18 percent, its lowest value ever measured by the institute. The gap between the two parties is now 12 points. The survey, carried out for Bild, questioned 1,202 eligible voters by phone and online between 28 September and 2 October. Insa gives a maximum margin of error of 2.9 points.

The other parties: SPD 14 percent (unchanged), Greens 14 percent (down one), Left 10 percent, and BSW and FDP 4 percent each, which would leave both outside the Bundestag. 79 percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with the work of the chancellor and of the federal government. Other institutes see a smaller lead. A Forsa poll for RTL puts the AfD at 26 percent and the Union at 19 percent, and GMS had already measured the AfD at 30 percent in mid September.

Polls are snapshots, not election results. But the figures make coalition building harder: the current government parties, Union and SPD, together reach only 32 percent in this survey. The AfD is classed nationally by the domestic intelligence service as a suspected extremist case. Political scientists link its rise to a stable core electorate and to mainstream parties adopting parts of its language, especially on migration.

What this means for you: migration is likely to stay at the centre of the political debate as parties react to the polls. Residence rules, family reunion and benefits for foreign nationals are the areas where pressure for change is strongest, so follow official announcements from the BAMF and your local immigration office rather than social media claims.
