Has Germany's 'migration turnaround' killed its ability to attract foreign workers?

Germany's tougher migration policies are raising concerns that the country could become less attractive to the foreign workers it urgently needs to fill growing labour shortages.

Since taking office, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government has introduced stricter border controls and adopted a tougher stance on migration. While the measures are aimed at reducing irregular immigration, critics fear they may also damage Germany's reputation among skilled professionals considering a move to the country.

Business groups and labour experts warn that Germany's ageing population means the country cannot sustain its workforce without international talent. As more baby boomers retire, foreign workers have become increasingly important across industries ranging from healthcare and engineering to manufacturing and logistics. Recent official figures show that employment growth is now being driven largely by foreign workers.

Experts argue that migration policy is only one part of the challenge. Foreign professionals continue to face lengthy bureaucracy, visa delays, housing shortages, difficulties in recognising qualifications, and language barriers. Many also report feeling socially isolated or unwelcome, leading some to leave Germany after only a few years despite securing employment.

The debate comes as Germany competes with countries such as Canada, Australia and others for highly skilled workers. Although recent reforms have made it easier for qualified professionals to enter Germany, analysts say attracting talent is no longer enough. Unless Germany improves everyday living conditions and creates a more welcoming environment, the country's migration crackdown could undermine its long-term ability to recruit and retain the international workforce its economy increasingly depends on.
