New funding in North Rhine-Westphalia: Only 90 out of 2800 primary schools are allowed to participate.

North Rhine-Westphalia has launched a new sports development program aimed at identifying athletic talent from first grade, but only 90 of the state's approximately 2,800 primary schools will be eligible to participate.

The initiative, known as the "NRW Sports Primary School" quality seal, will begin with the 2026–2027 school year. Schools selected for the program will be responsible for identifying promising young athletes early in their education and connecting them with local sports clubs to support their development.

The program is built around North Rhine-Westphalia's network of 18 sports schools. Each sports school has partnered with five nearby primary schools, creating a total of 90 eligible schools. These partner schools are the only institutions allowed to apply for the new certification.

To receive the quality seal, schools must meet several requirements, including offering additional physical activity and sports programs, conducting regular talent identification, organizing sports festivals and tournaments, and participating in regional and national school competitions. They must also work closely with local sports clubs, where teachers and club coaches will jointly guide talented students and help integrate them into organized sports.

Education Minister Dorothee Feller said that identifying and supporting athletic talent at an early age is essential, particularly as Germany continues its bid to host future Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, the initiative will benefit only a small portion of students. With around 728,650 children enrolled in primary schools across North Rhine-Westphalia, the vast majority will not have access to the new talent development program because their schools are not included in the scheme.
