Germany resumes deportations to Afghanistan
The German government has deported people to Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban seized power in 2021. As reported by the German Press Agency (dpa), a charter flight departed from Leipzig/Halle Airport for Kabul on Friday. On board were several Afghan nationals who had been classified as criminals in Germany.
The decision to carry out these deportations was made following intensive negotiations. The German government worked closely with Qatar, which acted as a mediator between Germany and the Afghan leadership. Since Germany does not maintain direct diplomatic relations with the Taliban government, this support was necessary to carry out the flight.
The issue of deportations has long been a subject of controversial debate in Germany. The government emphasizes that the safety of the population is its top priority and that convicted criminals must leave the country. Critics and human rights organizations, on the other hand, warn of the difficult security situation in Afghanistan and express concerns regarding human rights under the current government.
It remains to be seen whether this flight will remain an isolated incident or if further deportations to Afghanistan will follow in the future. The Federal Ministry of the Interior has not yet announced any details regarding further planned flights. However, the political debate over migration policy and the handling of individuals required to leave the country will remain a central issue in Germany.
