Wave of respiratory diseases: This is the current situation in Germany
With the onset of the cold season, the number of respiratory diseases in Germany traditionally rises. Experts are currently observing an increase in colds, flu cases, and coronavirus infections. Especially at the beginning of the new year, a significant rise in illness cases among the population is regularly observed.
The current situation is typical for the winter months. Since people spend more time in enclosed spaces at low temperatures, viruses spread significantly faster. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is monitoring the development closely in order to assess the burden on the healthcare system and medical practices.
Doctors advise citizens to pay attention to general hygiene in order to minimize the risk of infection. Regular hand washing, ventilating indoor spaces, and wearing masks on crowded public transport can help to slow the spread of viruses. Booster vaccinations against the flu or coronavirus also continue to be recommended for vulnerable groups.
Although the wave of illness is affecting many people, the situation in hospitals remains under control for now. Nevertheless, the situation remains dynamic. Health authorities are appealing to the personal responsibility of citizens to stay at home if they have severe symptoms of illness so as not to endanger other people.
