Money market accounts are once again yielding up to 4 percent.
Savers in Germany can once again earn up to 4% interest on instant-access savings accounts, but the highest rates often come with conditions that customers should carefully review before signing up.
A recent analysis by comparison platform Verivox found that several banks are offering attractive returns on both Tagesgeld (instant-access savings accounts) and Festgeld (fixed-term savings accounts). Chase and Norisbank currently offer up to 4% annual interest for new customers on Tagesgeld accounts, while the best two-year Festgeld deals pay up to 3.3%. However, these top promotional rates are only available for a limited period and may require customers to meet additional conditions.
For example, Chase offers its 4% rate for four months before reducing it to 2%, while Norisbank guarantees 4% until the end of December 2026 but requires customers to open a Girokonto (current account). Financial experts warn that consumers should not focus solely on the headline interest rate, as some offers are designed to encourage customers to purchase additional banking products.
For existing customers, the best available rates are lower. Ferratum currently offers 2.6% on instant-access savings, while Ascory Bank pays 2.5%. By comparison, the average nationwide Tagesgeld rate is only 1.38%, and Germany's Sparkassen (savings banks) pay an average of just 0.41%, making it worthwhile for savers to compare offers before depositing their money.
The Verivox analysis also highlights strong returns on fixed-term savings. Haitong Bank currently offers the highest two-year Festgeld rate at 3.3%, while savers who prefer Germany's domestic deposit protection can receive up to 3.1% from SWK Bank and Volkswagen Bank. Experts say comparing providers can make a significant difference, with the best offers generating more than €200 in additional interest on a €10,000 investment compared with the average savings products offered by many traditional banks.
