Merz government approves privileges for electric cars – 4 advantages with an E-license plate

Germany's government has approved four new and expanded benefits for electric vehicle owners, aiming to accelerate the country's shift toward cleaner transportation while making electric cars more attractive for drivers and businesses.

The cabinet led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz approved amendments to the Elektromobilitätsgesetz (Electromobility Act), extending existing incentives that were previously set to expire. The updated law also broadens the scope of the benefits and gives municipalities greater flexibility in encouraging electric mobility.

Under the new rules, local authorities will continue to have the option of allowing electric vehicles to use designated bus lanes where appropriate. Municipalities can also reserve dedicated parking spaces for EVs near charging stations, helping drivers access charging infrastructure more conveniently.

A new measure also allows municipalities to introduce free residential parking permits for electric vehicles. In addition, the revised law expands eligibility beyond passenger cars, enabling electric buses and heavy commercial vehicles to benefit from the incentives as well.

The German government says the changes are designed to reduce emissions, improve air quality and encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles. Officials believe the updated legal framework will provide greater planning certainty for municipalities while supporting the continued growth of Germany's electric vehicle market, which has already recorded a significant increase in new EV registrations this year.
