Health apps in Germany: Why the potential remains untapped so far
Digital health applications, so-called health apps, still play a subordinate role in the everyday lives of many people in Germany. Although the range of digital assistants is constantly growing, a current survey shows that the possibilities of these technologies are far from being fully utilized to date. Many patients and users are still hesitant to actively integrate digital offerings into their healthcare.
The reasons for this reluctance are manifold. Many users express concerns regarding data protection and the security of their sensitive health data. In addition, many people lack information about which apps are medically sound and which offer real added value for their own health. Technical complexity also deters some users, especially in older age groups.
Another important point is the cooperation between doctors and patients. Experts emphasize that health apps can be particularly successful if they are integrated into medical treatment. Currently, however, discussions about digital applications rarely take place in medical practices. Many physicians are still unsure how to recommend apps as a supplementary form of therapy.
Nevertheless, experts see great opportunities in the digitalization of the healthcare system. Apps could help to better control chronic diseases and improve communication between doctor and patient. However, for these digital solutions to find their firm place in the German healthcare system, both user trust must be strengthened and advice from specialist staff must be further expanded.
