Record Heat of 41.7 Degrees & Over 20 Drowning Deaths
Extreme heat has led to a new temperature record and numerous fatal swimming accidents in Germany. Additionally, a shooting with five fatalities has shaken the country, while investigations reveal new details about organized crime networks.
Please pay attention to safety while swimming, as more than 20 people drowned across Germany while bathing last weekend. Lifesavers from the DLRG (water rescue) reported these deaths during a period of extreme heat, in which Brandenburg recorded a new German temperature record of 41.7 degrees. A slight cooling to between 25 and 29 degrees is forecast for today, though it remains hot in the east and southeast with temperatures up to 32 degrees.
Amidst these weather conditions, an act of violence occurred in which at least five people were killed by gunfire. The background of the crime is currently being investigated.
Furthermore, organized crime activities are coming into focus. Investigations into networks of the so-called "Turkish Mafia" in Germany show that these groups are involved in extortion, drug trafficking, and contract killings, and are also threatening judicial officers.
