More Gender Equality in Music: Berlin Conference Calls for Change
On May 21, an important event for the German music industry took place in Berlin. The organization "Music Women* Germany" hosted the "Gender Equality Now" conference. Numerous experts gathered at Berlin's "Silent Green" cultural quarter to discuss the role of women and non-binary people in the music world. The goal of the conference was clear: things must change quickly so that all genders have the same opportunities.
In the German music industry, there are currently still significant disparities. Often, one sees almost exclusively male artists on the main stages of major festivals. Men also predominantly work in the executive suites of record labels and music publishers. Conference participants criticized that women often earn less, receive support less frequently, and are less visible in the public eye than their male colleagues.
During the event, concrete demands were made of the industry. The organization "Music Women* Germany" wants the music world to become more modern and fairer. A key point was the introduction of quotas for festivals so that more female musicians are booked in the future. Additionally, the speakers called for more support for women in technical professions, such as producers or sound engineers.
In addition to the technical presentations, there was plenty of room for discussion and personal networking. Many young female artists took the opportunity to exchange ideas with experienced professionals and build contacts. It became clear that a strong network is one of the most important prerequisites for taking action against discrimination and advancing one's own career. The atmosphere on-site was determined and motivated.
The "Gender Equality Now" conference was an important signal for the entire German cultural scene. It showed that the issue of equality can no longer be ignored. Now it is up to those responsible in politics and business to take these demands seriously and implement them. Only through real change can the music industry become more diverse, just, and modern in the future.
