Explosion near Leipzig Airport shortly before drone discovery
A drone sighting near Leipzig/Halle Airport triggered a security operation and temporarily disrupted flight operations, with one runway closed while police searched for the person believed to be controlling the aircraft.
The incident occurred near the airport’s northern runway. After witnesses reported seeing a drone, air traffic controllers closed the runway as a precaution. Police were then called in to search the surrounding area and look for the drone operator.
The closure raised concerns because drones flying close to airports can pose a serious danger to aircraft during takeoff and landing. Even a relatively small drone can cause significant damage if it collides with an aircraft.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about drone activity around German airports and other critical infrastructure. Leipzig/Halle Airport has recently faced several serious drone-related security incidents, including an earlier case in which a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered near an aircraft.
In that earlier incident, specialists from the Bundespolizei (Federal Police) successfully neutralized the explosive device. Flight operations were temporarily interrupted during the overnight security operation, while aircraft were later able to use another runway.
Authorities have increasingly warned that conventional airport security systems may not always be capable of detecting small drones quickly enough. Aviation experts have called for stronger and faster deployment of drone-detection and defense systems at airports across Germany.
The latest runway closure highlights the growing challenge facing airports as drone sightings become an increasingly serious aviation and security concern. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the sighting and search for those responsible.
