Sahra Wagenknecht proposes TV debate with Alice Weidel
The founder of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), Sahra Wagenknecht, has caused a stir in German politics. In a recent debate, she called for an end to the so-called “firewall” against the AfD. By this, she refers to the political distancing of other parties from the AfD.
To clarify her position, Wagenknecht proposed a direct TV debate against AfD party leader Alice Weidel. Wagenknecht wants to use this opportunity to publicly discuss the substantive differences between her party and the AfD. She hopes that such a conversation will provide clarity regarding the political platforms of both parties.
The demand to end the firewall is highly controversial in Germany. Most established parties continue to strictly reject any cooperation with the AfD. They justify this with the political orientation of the AfD, which many classify as right-wing extremist.
It remains to be seen whether such a duel will actually take place. So far, there has been no official confirmation from Alice Weidel or any television broadcaster. However, the political debate regarding how to deal with the AfD and the BSW will remain a central topic in the coming weeks leading up to the elections.
