AfD reaches 44.4 percent in Saxony-Anhalt, CDU vote share halved
In the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD has become the strongest force by a wide margin. The third projection by Infratest dimap at 8:00 p.m. puts the party at around 44.4 percent. The CDU has plummeted to 18.2 percent, effectively halving its 2021 result. It is the worst CDU result in a state election in Saxony-Anhalt. The Left Party (Die Linke) reached 9.1 percent, the Greens 8.7 percent, and the SPD 8.5 percent. Voter turnout was 76.5 percent, significantly higher than in the previous election. The state branch of the AfD is classified by the Saxony-Anhalt Office for the Protection of the Constitution as definitively right-wing extremist.
For people with a migration background in Saxony-Anhalt, this result is of immediate importance. During the election campaign, the AfD announced its intention to abolish the fundamental right to asylum. However, whether it can govern has not been decided by this. All other parties have ruled out a coalition with the AfD. Lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund said on election night that he saw no possible government partners "at present," but later indicated openness to talks with the CDU.
Legally, nothing will change for you for the time being. Residence law, asylum law, and citizenship law are federal laws and are not made in Magdeburg. A state parliament cannot change them. However, areas that the state manages itself could be affected, such as the staffing of immigration authorities, state admission programs, integration courses, and counseling centers.
The figures are projections and not yet an official result. The preliminary result is expected on election night or Monday morning. The new state parliament must meet for its first session by October 6 at the latest. Only then will the formation of a government begin.
