New 'compass classes' aim to integrate migrant children in education system

Germany is introducing a new education initiative called Kompass-Klassen (Compass Classes) to help newly arrived migrant and refugee children integrate more quickly into the country's school system.

The first Kompass-Klassen are expected to open in Ludwigshafen in the 2026/27 school year. The program is aimed at migrant and refugee children in grades five to ten who have little or no knowledge of German. Instead of entering regular classrooms immediately, students will spend between six and twelve weeks in intensive language classes while their academic level is assessed.

After completing the program, the students will move into regular school classes. However, German language support will continue alongside their normal lessons, with the amount of additional instruction depending on each child's language skills. The goal is to ensure that children can participate successfully in mainstream education without being left behind because of language barriers.

The initiative was announced by Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) Minister-President Alexander Schnieder, while Education Minister Ute Eiling-Hütig said the project would be expanded gradually if the first classes prove successful. The reform is designed to improve educational opportunities for migrant children while making their transition into German schools more structured and effective.

Germany has long faced the challenge of integrating newly arrived migrant children into its education system, especially those who arrive without sufficient German language skills. Officials believe the new Kompass-Klassen will provide a stronger foundation for learning, helping students adapt more quickly to school life and increasing their chances of long-term academic success.
