East and West: What is the state of Germany's economic unity today?

More than 30 years after German reunification, differences still exist between the new and old federal states. Current data present a mixed picture of the economic situation in Germany. While some regions in the East are experiencing strong growth, other areas continue to struggle with demographic change and a shrinking population.

A central point is unemployment. In many eastern federal states, the unemployment rate has fallen significantly in recent years, yet it remains slightly higher on average than in the West. Especially in rural regions in the East, it is often difficult for young people to find attractive jobs, which prompts many to move to larger cities or to the West.

Interestingly, new statistics show a surprising development in purchasing power. In some East German regions, the disposable income of households has risen in recent years. This is due, among other things, to a growing number of industrial settlements and improved infrastructure. Nevertheless, the gap in wages and assets between East and West remains an important topic in political debate.

Another problem is the shrinking of many smaller towns and municipalities. When young skilled workers migrate, local labor and taxpayers are missing. This poses major challenges for municipalities in financing schools, hospitals, and public transport. The federal government is therefore attempting to strengthen the economic attractiveness of these regions through targeted funding programs.

In summary, it can be said that while economic convergence in Germany is making progress, it is not yet complete. The differences between the regions today are less a question of East versus West, and more a question of city versus country. Policymakers face the task of creating equivalent living conditions throughout Germany.
