Suspect in Berlin Pride attack shot dead by police
German authorities launched a nationwide manhunt after identifying a suspected Islamist extremist linked to a deadly attack during Berlin’s Pride celebrations that killed one person and injured dozens.
Police named the suspect as Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen who was reportedly known to security services because of previous links to the Islamist scene. Authorities said investigators were searching for him after a vehicle was driven into crowds attending Christopher Street Day (CSD – Pride celebration) in Berlin.
The attack happened on Saturday evening when a vehicle struck people near the Pride event, causing deaths and injuries before the suspect fled. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said early evidence pointed toward an Islamist terrorist motive, citing the suspect’s previous criminal history, radicalisation concerns, and connections to extremist circles.
The case has triggered renewed debate in Germany over how authorities handle individuals considered potential security risks. Officials are facing questions about whether existing monitoring systems and legal measures are strong enough to prevent attacks by people already known to police.
Investigators continued examining the suspect’s background, possible motives, and whether anyone else was involved. The attack has deeply affected Berlin’s LGBTQ+ community, with political leaders and activists calling for unity while demanding stronger protection for public events and vulnerable communities.
