Upheaval in German Sports: Nagelsmann Resigns and Leo Neugebauer is Honored
Major changes in German football: Julian Nagelsmann is no longer the national team coach. Following the national team's early exit from the World Cup, the German Football Association (DFB) and Nagelsmann have decided to part ways. This decision followed an in-depth analysis of the weak performances during the tournament. The news is causing a lot of discussion among fans and experts throughout Germany.
Criticism of the team is significant following the World Cup exit. Former national players Toni Kroos and Lukas Podolski expressed disappointment regarding the current situation. In particular, the 1-2 defeat against Ecuador at the end of the group stage was sharply criticized. Podolski demanded that the players must now reflect intensively on their mistakes. Captain Joshua Kimmich, on the other hand, emphasized in an interview that it is unimportant whether one enters a tournament as a favorite. For him, only the actual performance on the pitch counts in the future.
Despite the crisis in football, there is also positive news from the German sports world. Decathlete Leo Neugebauer was named "Sportsperson of the Year 2025" at the "Sports Illustrated Germany Awards" in Munich. Neugebauer had previously won the world championship title at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Professional footballer Mats Hummels gave an impressive speech honoring the winner, calling Neugebauer an athlete who "can do everything" and is a true role model.
There is also news for Germany in the digital economy. Preparations for the "Games Germany Steam Sale 2026" have begun. German developers and studios can apply to participate in the sales promotion until the end of March. Additionally, the "Games Gathering Germany" event will take place in Wiesbaden in February. These events are important for increasing the international visibility of the German video game industry and promoting it.
Germany is currently experiencing a period of change in sports. While football is searching for a new beginning and a new coach, other sports such as athletics are celebrating great successes. The coming months will show how the national team reorganizes itself and which athletes will be in the spotlight next year.
