German minister warns against unacceptable delays to 10 bln euro satellite project

Germany's defense minister has warned that delays to the country's planned €10 billion military satellite project are unacceptable, stressing that the rapidly changing global security environment leaves no room for setbacks.

During a visit to satellite manufacturer OHB in Bremen, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called for strict adherence to both the project's timeline and budget. The initiative, known as SATCOMBw4 (Satellite Communications for the Bundeswehr), is designed to give the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) an independent, space-based communications network similar to SpaceX's Starlink system.

The project is expected to involve around 200 satellites, with an initial group of approximately 40 satellites scheduled to begin operations in 2029. Germany plans to award the main contracts by the end of 2026. Once operational, the system will provide secure global communications, early warning, reconnaissance, detection capabilities, and improved military command and control while strengthening Germany's commitments to NATO.

The satellite network is being developed through cooperation between OHB, Rheinmetall, and, according to government and industry sources, Airbus Defence. However, some industry observers have expressed concerns that the consortium's structure could reduce competition and limit opportunities to lower costs.

Pistorius also warned that threats targeting satellites are already a reality, with several countries investing heavily in offensive space capabilities. He said Germany intends to invest around €35 billion in space security by 2030, underlining the government's determination to strengthen its defense infrastructure and ensure the satellite program is delivered without further delays.
