Large families attack each other with hammers and axes.
A violent mass brawl erupted in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, on Sunday evening when more than 20 people from two apparently rival Großfamilien (extended families) attacked each other with axes, hammers and baseball bats.
Police received numerous emergency calls at around 6:50 p.m. reporting a serious fight at Bonner Platz in central Düren. When officers arrived, the two groups had already been separated, with witnesses reportedly trying to stop the confrontation.
Video footage obtained by police shows several people lying injured and bleeding in the street. One man appears to be unconscious, while women were also among those injured. The footage also shows a man with a dog shouting at one of the participants to drop an axe.
Police said several people suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious. Ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals, but authorities said none of the victims was in life-threatening condition.
The exact reason for the confrontation remains unclear. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fight and the identities of those involved. The incident reportedly involved between 15 and 20 people, with the participants believed to have come from two feuding Großfamilien.
The violent confrontation has raised fresh concerns about large-scale street fights involving rival groups. Police are continuing to investigate the incident and determine what triggered the dispute and whether further legal action will be taken.
