Resistance to Nazi terror commemorated

Germany has commemorated the courageous individuals who resisted Nazi terror, honoring those who risked and often lost their lives while opposing Adolf Hitler's dictatorship during World War II.

The annual remembrance ceremony took place on the anniversary of the failed 20 July Plot (20 July assassination attempt), when German army officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and fellow conspirators attempted to assassinate Hitler in 1944. Although the attack failed and Hitler survived, the plot became one of the most well-known acts of resistance against the Nazi regime. Thousands of people linked to the conspiracy were later arrested, with many executed in the following months.

German leaders used this year's commemorations to highlight the importance of standing up against dictatorship, hatred, and attacks on democracy. Officials stressed that the courage shown by resistance fighters remains an example for future generations, especially at a time when democratic values continue to face growing challenges across Europe.

The remembrance also recognized that resistance to Nazi rule came from many different backgrounds. Alongside military officers, students, religious figures, workers, and ordinary citizens secretly opposed the regime through protests, distributing anti-Nazi leaflets, protecting persecuted people, or refusing to obey unjust orders. Many of these individuals paid for their actions with imprisonment, torture, or execution.

Ceremonies were held at the Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand (German Resistance Memorial Center) in Berlin, located at the historic Bendlerblock, where Stauffenberg and several co-conspirators were executed shortly after the failed coup. The memorial serves as a reminder that even under one of history's most brutal dictatorships, there were Germans who chose to resist oppression instead of remaining silent.
