Germany’s Merz ‘confident’ that far-right AfD won’t take state governments

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says he is confident the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD – Alternative for Germany) will not take control of any German state governments despite the party's growing popularity.

Speaking at his summer press conference, Merz acknowledged that the AfD has gained significant support, particularly in eastern Germany, where regional elections later this year could see the party achieve historic results. However, he said he remains optimistic that voters will ultimately reject giving the AfD a governing majority.

Merz appealed directly to AfD supporters, urging them to judge his government's performance rather than relying on political commentary or social media. He said his administration is focused on protecting Germany's freedom, economic stability, and long-term prosperity through reforms designed to strengthen Europe's largest economy.

The chancellor also reaffirmed the Brandmauer (firewall against cooperation with the far right), stressing that his CDU (Christlich Demokratische Union – Christian Democratic Union) will not form coalitions or cooperate with the AfD at the state or federal level. He argued that maintaining this political boundary is essential despite the AfD's electoral gains.

Regional elections, particularly in Saxony-Anhalt, are expected to be a major test for Germany's political landscape. While opinion polls suggest the AfD remains a strong contender, Merz insisted he believes mainstream parties can prevent the far-right from taking power and said he would keep that confidence "right up to election night."
