Germany investigates suspected Iran-linked spying and attack plans

German authorities are investigating suspected Iran-linked surveillance activities and possible preparations for attacks following rising tensions in the Middle East. The investigation comes after reports of a so-called Iranian "revenge list" that included Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

According to Germany's Interior Ministry, federal security agencies are closely examining several leads involving suspected reconnaissance operations and potential attack planning connected to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Officials said security services are working alongside Germany's regional authorities and international partners to continuously monitor and assess the evolving threat.

The heightened alert follows the publication of an image by Tehran municipality-affiliated newspaper Hamshahri, which displayed 13 international leaders wearing prison uniforms inside crosshairs under the caption, "Revenge is certain." Among those shown were German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Germany's Interior Ministry said it is aware of the publication and confirmed that protection measures provided by the BKA (Bundeskriminalamt – Federal Criminal Police Office) are being continuously reviewed and adjusted whenever necessary. Officials added that, despite the latest escalation involving the United States and Iran, Germany's overall national threat assessment has not worsened beyond its already elevated level.

The ministry also warned that Iran has historically relied on asymmetric tactics, including intelligence gathering, intimidation of regime opponents living abroad, and the use of allied groups to advance its interests. Authorities said Germany will remain vigilant and continue coordinating with international partners to respond to any potential security risks linked to these activities.
