Hitler's birthplace begins new life as a police station

The house where Adolf Hitler was born has officially reopened as a police station in Austria, marking a major effort to stop the historic site from becoming a destination for neo-Nazi supporters.

The building is located in Braunau am Inn (Braunau on the Inn River), near Austria's border with Germany. After years of public and political debate, the Austrian government decided to convert the property into a police station instead of turning it into a museum or demolishing it. Officials believe giving the building a practical public function removes its symbolic value for extremist groups.

Austria purchased the property in 2017 and announced plans for its transformation in 2019. The renovated building now bears only the word "Police" on its exterior, while a memorial stone outside remains in place with the message "Never again fascism," serving as a reminder of the victims of Nazi rule.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said the new police station represents democracy, security, and the rule of law—the complete opposite of the ideology associated with Adolf Hitler. Historian Stephan Mlczoch also noted that Hitler lived in the house only briefly after his birth in 1889, making its historical connection more symbolic than practical.

The decision has received mixed reactions. Many local residents support the new purpose, believing a police presence will discourage extremist visitors. However, the Mauthausen Komitee (Mauthausen Committee), a Holocaust remembrance organization, argues that simply repurposing the building may not encourage enough reflection on Austria's Nazi past and the crimes committed during that era.

For decades, Austria struggled to determine the future of the controversial property. By transforming it into a functioning government building, authorities hope to ensure it is remembered not as a shrine to dictatorship, but as a place that symbolizes democratic values and rejects fascism.
