Wave of respiratory diseases: This is the current situation in Germany
In recent weeks, the number of respiratory diseases in Germany has risen significantly. Experts at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) are observing an increase in colds, flu cases, and coronavirus infections. Many medical practices are currently under heavy strain, as the cold season favors the spread of viruses.
In particular, the coronavirus and the influenza virus are currently circulating intensively among the population. While many people show only mild symptoms such as coughing or a runny nose, the infections can become dangerous for older people or individuals with pre-existing conditions. Medical professionals emphasize that the combination of different viruses makes the current wave particularly dynamic.
To protect themselves and others, health authorities continue to advise following well-known hygiene rules. These include regular hand washing, ventilating closed rooms, and wearing a mask on crowded public transport if you feel ill. The annual flu vaccination is also still recommended for high-risk groups.
Anyone who notices symptoms of a respiratory illness should take it easy for the first few days and reduce social contact. In the event of a high fever or difficulty breathing, a visit to a general practitioner is advisable. Experts expect the infection wave to reach its peak in the coming weeks before the numbers are expected to fall again.
