Germany Sweats: Record Temperatures of Over 40 Degrees Expected
Temperatures are currently rising sharply across Germany. Meteorologists are warning of an extreme heatwave that will have a firm grip on the country over the coming days. In many regions, values of up to 40 degrees are expected, which is exceptionally high for this time of year.
The heat is particularly noticeable in the south and west of Germany. The sun is shining almost continuously, and there is hardly any cooling from wind or rain. Experts are already speaking of possible new temperature records. These extreme weather conditions are part of a global trend in which hot summers are occurring more and more frequently in Europe.
The high temperatures pose a significant health risk. Doctors advise staying in the shade during the hot midday period and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities. It is particularly important to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep the body fit. Elderly people and children should be especially careful in this weather.
Nature is also suffering from the ongoing drought. In many German forests, there is currently a very high risk of forest fires, which is why open fires are strictly prohibited. In addition, the water levels of many rivers are falling, which can lead to problems for shipping. Agriculture is urgently hoping for rain so that crops in the fields do not dry out.
Unfortunately, a quick cool-down is not in sight for the time being. Weather services assume that the extreme heat will continue for a few more days. Only towards the end of the week could local thunderstorms provide some slight relief. Until then, it is important to take the heat seriously and look after yourself and those around you.
