Border checks renewed along German-Danish border

Germany has renewed temporary border checks along its border with Denmark, extending the controls as part of its ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration, human smuggling and cross-border crime.

The controls, first introduced in response to growing migration and security concerns, will remain in place until at least September 2026. German authorities say the measures are necessary to reduce unauthorized entries, disrupt migrant smuggling networks and strengthen national security, even though both Germany and Denmark are members of the Schengen Area, where passport-free travel is normally guaranteed.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has defended the decision, arguing that the border checks have already contributed to a decline in irregular migration and helped police identify smugglers and individuals attempting to enter the country illegally. The government maintains that the checks are temporary and proportionate to the current security situation.

The extension has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters believe the controls are an effective tool against illegal migration and organized crime, while critics argue they undermine the principle of free movement within the Schengen Zone and may cause delays for commuters, tourists and cross-border businesses.

Germany is not the only European country maintaining internal border controls. Several Schengen members, including Denmark, France, Austria, Sweden, the Netherlands and Poland, have also temporarily reintroduced checks, citing concerns over irregular migration, terrorism and cross-border security threats. The European Commission allows such measures under exceptional circumstances, provided they remain temporary and justified.
