Jobcenter cuts benefits by 30 percent if you miss an appointment

Since July 1, 2026, stricter rules regarding reporting appointments and obligations to cooperate have been in effect for basic security benefits. Anyone who repeatedly misses an appointment at the Jobcenter without a valid reason will have their standard benefit rate reduced by 30 percent. Based on a standard rate of 563 euros, this amounts to 168.90 euros per month. Those who miss three consecutive appointments may lose their entitlement to benefits entirely, including coverage for housing costs.

Jobcenters are now consistently implementing these requirements. In Duisburg, the Jobcenter responded to a temporarily very high no-show rate of up to one-third of all appointments by deploying a field service team that visits benefit recipients at home. The new requirements are also already being applied in Oberhausen. According to its own statement, the Duisburg Jobcenter management is aiming for greater accountability.

Proof requirements for sick notes have also been tightened. Since the effective date, under Section 56 of the German Social Code (SGB II), Jobcenters can demand further evidence if there are reasonable doubts regarding an individual's incapacity for work, for example, if appointments are repeatedly cancelled citing health reasons.

However, there is another side to this that is less well known. An announced home visit by the field service does not grant an unrestricted right of entry to your home. The authority must be able to explain the legal basis it is relying on and why a less intrusive measure is not sufficient. Furthermore, a reduction in benefits requires that you have been informed in writing and in an understandable manner about the consequences beforehand.

What you should specifically do: Cancel any appointment you cannot attend in advance and state the reason. Submit a medical certificate of incapacity for work immediately and keep a copy. Keep your address and telephone number up to date with the Jobcenter, as being reachable is part of your obligations to cooperate. And if you receive a notice of reduction: You have one month to file an objection, and it costs nothing.
