Germany accuses Russia of drone attack on Leipzig airport

Germany has accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, saying the incident was part of a broader pattern of Russian hybrid operations targeting European countries.

The incident occurred on August 4, when an explosives-laden drone was found near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. The device was safely defused, and authorities said it had been deliberately directed toward the aircraft.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said investigators had found evidence linking the operation to individuals acting on behalf of Russian state agencies. He described the incident as part of a wider Russian strategy aimed at destabilizing European countries and undermining support for Ukraine.

The suspected attack has prompted Berlin to take several measures against Moscow. Germany plans to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and terminate an agreement concerning the Russisches Haus (Russian House) cultural center in Berlin. The government also intends to push for additional European Union sanctions and tighter restrictions on certain Russian nationals.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the incident demonstrated the growing threat posed by Russian hybrid activities in Europe. Germany is also seeking closer coordination with EU and NATO allies as officials consider further measures against Moscow.

Russia has rejected Germany’s accusations, describing them as unfounded. Russian officials have accused Berlin of using the incident as a pretext for further anti-Russian measures and warned that Moscow could introduce retaliatory actions.

The Leipzig incident has further increased tensions between Germany and Russia at a time when European governments are increasingly concerned about suspected sabotage, espionage and other covert operations linked to Moscow. Berlin has reaffirmed that it will continue supporting Ukraine despite the growing security risks.
