Germany prepares for extreme heatwave
Germany is currently experiencing an extraordinary heatwave. In the coming days, meteorologists expect temperatures that could reach or even exceed the 40-degree Celsius mark in many regions of the country.
These extreme weather conditions pose a major challenge for the population. Heat builds up particularly in cities, as buildings and asphalt heat up significantly and offer little cooling even at night.
Experts are warning specifically about the health risks. Elderly people, children, and those with pre-existing conditions are among the most vulnerable groups. It is important to drink enough water in these temperatures and to avoid physical exertion in the midday sun.
Authorities are calling on people to support one another and look out for neighbors who might need help. Pets should also be especially protected during this heat and provided with plenty of fresh water.
The heatwave once again underscores the importance of climate adaptation measures in German cities. Experts are increasingly discussing the need for more green spaces and shaded areas to better mitigate the effects of such weather events in the future.
