Driver's license and car repair: When the Jobcenter will pay for you

As of July 1, 2026, the 'Bürgergeld' (citizen's benefit) is officially called 'Grundsicherungsgeld' (basic security benefit), and a rule regarding support from the Jobcenter has changed, which makes a significant difference in practice. In the professional instructions of the Federal Employment Agency regarding discretionary support under Section 16f of the Social Code Book II (SGB II), the prohibition on supplementing and bypassing existing benefits has been removed. Jobcenters are now permitted to modify, supplement, and combine existing benefits. The instruction explicitly mentions the funding of a driver's license or a vehicle for this purpose.

The second avenue is the placement budget under Section 44 of the Social Code Book III (SGB III). This can be used to pay for a driver's license, travel expenses, application costs, and, in justified individual cases, a vehicle, provided that a specific job subject to social security contributions cannot be reached without a car. Work clothing is only included if the employer is not already required to provide it. Insurance and vehicle tax are excluded.

What you can realistically expect: There is no legal entitlement. Both are discretionary benefits; the Jobcenter decides on a case-by-case basis and must justify its decision. Money from the placement budget is a grant that you do not have to repay. Support under Section 16f, however, can also be granted as a loan, so ask in advance which method is being used. Amounts such as 5,000 euros for a car or 3,000 euros for a driver's license come from a local directive of the Dortmund Jobcenter and are not a nationwide upper limit.

Car repair is the weakest point. It is not listed in the instruction for the placement budget and is decided on a case-by-case basis, often via a loan. The State Social Court of North Rhine-Westphalia clarified in February 2026 that there is no automatic entitlement to the coverage of a repair.

Timing is crucial. Submit your application in writing or electronically before any costs are incurred—that is, before registering at a driving school and before commissioning a workshop. Under Section 37 SGB II, nothing is paid for the period prior to the application. Include your employment contract or offer of employment, a cost estimate, and a travel schedule demonstrating that buses and trains do not cover your shift. You have one month to file an objection against a rejection.
