SuedLink Project: Important milestone reached in tunnel construction under the Elbe
Significant progress has been made on the major SuedLink project. Work on a 5.2-kilometer-long tunnel running under the Elbe has been successfully completed. This tunnel connects the towns of Wewelsfleth in Schleswig-Holstein and Wischhafen in Lower Saxony.
The SuedLink project is a central power line designed to transport wind energy from northern Germany to industrial centers in the south in the future. Crossing under the Elbe was considered one of the most technically demanding tasks of the entire construction project. With the tunnel now finished, the power cables can be safely laid beneath the river.
The construction of the power line is a key component of Germany's energy transition. Since electricity demand in southern Germany is high, but much energy is generated via wind power in the north, expanding the power grid is necessary. SuedLink is intended to help increase security of supply throughout Germany and boost the share of renewable energy in the grid.
The completion of the tunnel boring is a positive signal for the project's timeline. In the coming months, further work on installing the cables and technical equipment will continue. The entire project remains a central topic for German energy policy and infrastructure in the coming years.
