Unbelievable act: Thief plunders water rescue cash box
A volunteer water rescue team in Austria has been left shocked after a thief broke into its station and stole money belonging to the organization. The incident has caused anger among the unpaid emergency workers who dedicate their time to helping others.
The break-in happened at the Wasserrettung Mittersill (Water Rescue Mittersill) station in Salzburg. According to the organization, the thief searched through the premises and stole the entire Kameradschaftsgeld (team fund), which is used to support the activities of the volunteer group.
It remains unclear whether the criminal took any additional items from the station. The water rescue team said a full assessment of possible losses would take place in the coming days, while a police report has already been filed and investigations are underway.
Members of the Wasserrettung Mittersill (Water Rescue Mittersill) said the theft was especially painful because the organization operates entirely through volunteers. The team provides emergency assistance around the clock, with equipment, training and daily operations largely funded through donations and income from swimming courses.
Despite the shock, the rescue workers continued their duties shortly after discovering the crime. The team responded to an emergency support operation for the Feuerwehr Stuhlfelden (Stuhlfelden Fire Brigade) following storm damage, saying that people in need still depend on their help.
The organization also rejected attempts to blame entire groups of people for the crime, stressing that criminal acts are committed by individuals and should not be used to spread hatred or discrimination. The water rescue team said it would continue serving the community despite the incident.
