Germany resumes deportations to Afghanistan
The German government has deported people to Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban takeover in 2021. A plane carrying several convicted criminals took off from Germany on Friday, heading toward Kabul. This measure marks a significant shift in German migration policy, as no repatriations to the country had taken place previously due to the security situation and the lack of diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
The decision was made possible through cooperation with Qatar, which acted as a mediator between Germany and the Afghan government. Shortly after the deadly knife attack in Mannheim, Chancellor Olaf Scholz had already announced that Germany would once again deport criminals and individuals deemed a threat to their countries of origin, even if those countries are Afghanistan or Syria.
The measure is sparking an intense political debate in Germany. While proponents emphasize that the rule of law must take consistent action against criminals, human rights organizations and some opposition politicians are expressing serious concerns. They warn of the precarious human rights situation in Afghanistan and criticize the cooperation with the Taliban regime, which is not officially recognized internationally.
However, the federal government emphasizes that the safety of the population in Germany is the top priority. The Ministry of the Interior stated that the repatriations were prepared in close coordination with international partners. It remains unclear at this time whether this will remain an isolated case or if further deportations to Afghanistan will take place regularly in the future.
