Germany resumes deportations to Afghanistan
The German government has deported people to Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban seized power in 2021. A charter plane took off early in the morning from Leipzig/Halle Airport bound for Kabul. On board were several Afghan nationals who had been classified as criminals in Germany.
The decision to carry out these deportations follows a lengthy political debate in Germany. After a deadly knife attack in Mannheim in May of this year, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany would once again step up the deportation of criminals and individuals deemed a threat to their countries of origin, even if those countries are considered unsafe. The federal government emphasized that the safety of the population in Germany takes priority.
Germany worked with Qatar to carry out the deportations. Since the federal government does not maintain direct diplomatic relations with the Taliban government in Afghanistan, the Emirate of Qatar acted as a mediator. This diplomatic support was necessary to facilitate the flight and the return of the individuals.
However, critics and human rights organizations have expressed concerns regarding this practice. They point out that human rights are being massively restricted in Afghanistan under Taliban rule and that those deported face danger there. The government, however, is sticking to its position that serious criminal offenses forfeit protection status in Germany.
The federal government plans to carry out further deportations of this kind in the future. The Ministry of the Interior is currently reviewing additional cases to consistently implement the return of rejected asylum seekers who have committed crimes.
