Sick note no longer automatically sufficient for Jobcenter appointments
The new basic security system has been in effect since July 1, 2026. One change directly affects benefit recipients and has so far received little attention: anyone who misses an appointment at the Jobcenter and submits a sick note as justification is no longer automatically considered excused.
WHAT HAS CHANGED
Previously, the Jobcenter needed concrete evidence before it was allowed to question a medical certificate. Under the new regulation, repeated sick notes used to justify missed appointments are explicitly cited as grounds for verifying incapacity for work. Social welfare organizations are sharply criticizing this, speaking of a general suspicion directed toward sick benefit recipients.
THE CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE
Incapacity for work means that you cannot work. It does not automatically mean that you are unable to make the journey to the office. This is precisely where the Jobcenters are focusing: they are increasingly demanding separate confirmation of so-called "inability to travel" – meaning that you were truly unable to appear at the appointment.
WHY THIS CAN BECOME EXPENSIVE
Under the new basic security system, a missed appointment carries more weight than it did under the previous Bürgergeld. Sanctions have been tightened, and repeated absences can lead to the complete loss of benefits.
WHAT YOU SHOULD SPECIFICALLY DO
Get in touch on the same day. Call or write before the appointment time passes – not after.
Submit the certificate in a verifiable manner. In person with a received stamp, by registered mail, or via the online portal with confirmation. A regular letter cannot be proven later.
Have your inability to travel confirmed separately. Ask your doctor to explicitly note that you were unable to make the journey to the Jobcenter. That is a different sentence than "incapable of work" – and it is the sentence that counts.
Propose a replacement appointment yourself. This shows a willingness to cooperate and becomes a matter of record.
IF YOU ARE SANCTIONED ANYWAY
You can file an objection against a sanction notice. The deadline is one month from the receipt of the notice. Free advice is provided by social welfare organizations such as VdK and SoVD, as well as unemployment counseling centers. If you have a low income, you can apply for legal aid at the local district court.
