Germany Plans New Law to Promote Elite Sports
The German federal government has agreed on a new law to better support professional sports in the country. The so-called "Sports Promotion Act" is a first in Germany. For the first time, there is to be a legal basis that precisely regulates how the state provides financial and organizational support for elite sports.
The main goal of this reform is to improve conditions for German athletes. In the past, there was often criticism that structures were too complicated and that athletes did not receive enough support at international competitions, such as the Olympic Games. With the new law, the government wants to ensure that Germany remains competitive on an international level.
A central point of the agreement is the founding of a new "Elite Sports Agency." In the future, this agency will decide which sports and which athletes receive special funding. Until now, this process was often very bureaucratic and lengthy. The new agency is intended to work more independently and ensure that the money reaches where it is needed more quickly – namely, for training and equipment.
The governing parties SPD, Greens, and FDP negotiated the details of this law for a long time. It was a challenge to find a balance between state control and the freedom of sports. The solution now found provides for sports to be managed more professionally, while athletes gain more security for their career planning.
For many sports associations in Germany, this news is a positive signal. They hope that the new structure will make preparation for future major events more efficient. Before the law can finally come into force, however, it must still be officially passed by the Bundestag. Experts expect this to happen in the coming months.
