Wave of respiratory illnesses: This is the current situation in Germany
At the beginning of the new year, health authorities in Germany are recording a significant increase in respiratory illnesses. Many people are currently suffering from colds, the flu, or a coronavirus infection. The number of cases is at a high level, which is typical for the cold season.
Experts are monitoring the situation closely, as the combination of different viruses is placing a heavy burden on the population's immune system. Especially during the winter months, pathogens spread more quickly in closed spaces, leading to a high number of sick leave reports in companies and schools.
To slow the spread of the viruses, medical professionals continue to advise proven protective measures. These include regular hand washing, ventilating indoor spaces, and wearing a mask on particularly crowded public transport if you are feeling ill yourself.
In addition, vaccination remains an important tool for preventing severe courses of illness. Especially for older people and individuals with pre-existing conditions, health authorities recommend regularly checking and, if necessary, updating vaccination protection against the flu and COVID-19.
The current wave of infections is a recurring phenomenon in Germany. Although the numbers are high, the healthcare system is currently able to provide care for patients. Nevertheless, citizens should look after their health and consult a doctor if they experience severe symptoms.
