Germany launches its first capacity auction for 4500 MW: What technologies can participate?

Germany has announced its first-ever capacity auction, offering up to 4,500 megawatts (MW) in a major move to strengthen electricity security while supporting the country's transition to cleaner energy.

The new auction is designed to ensure enough backup power is available when renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are unable to meet demand. Instead of paying only for electricity produced, the system will also reward facilities for being ready to supply power whenever the grid requires it.

A wide range of technologies will be allowed to compete in the auction. Eligible participants include hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants, battery energy storage systems, demand response projects that reduce electricity consumption during peak periods, and other flexible resources capable of supporting grid stability.

German officials believe the auction will encourage new investments in reliable power infrastructure while helping maintain a stable electricity supply as the country continues expanding renewable energy. The initiative is also expected to improve energy security by ensuring sufficient reserve capacity during periods of high demand or low renewable generation.

The 4,500 MW auction represents a significant milestone in Germany's evolving electricity market. Industry experts say the competitive process could accelerate the deployment of advanced energy technologies, attract private investment, and provide a model for future capacity auctions as Europe continues modernizing its power systems.
