Preparing for an Emergency: German rescEU Unit Trains for Hazardous Material Operations
The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the Federal Police have practiced their cooperation during hazardous material operations in a large-scale joint exercise. The goal of the exercise was to test the procedures of the German rescEU unit and to optimize the distribution of tasks among the various emergency forces.
The rescEU unit is a European project designed to strengthen disaster protection within the EU. Germany plays a key role in decontamination following incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) substances. During the exercise, procedures for cleaning personnel and equipment after potential contact with hazardous substances were practiced, among other things.
Preparations for this project have been underway for some time. The participating authorities use these exercises to ensure that the specialized equipment and personnel work together seamlessly in an emergency. The primary focus is on being able to react quickly and efficiently to cross-border threats.
Full operational readiness for the German unit is scheduled for December of this year. Once this status is achieved, the unit can also be requested internationally within the framework of the European Civil Protection Mechanism to provide support during major accidents or other hazardous situations.
