Özdemir attacks Islamic associations after CSD attack
Baden-Württemberg Minister-President Cem Özdemir has criticized Islamic umbrella organizations in Germany following the deadly attack at a Christopher Street Day (CSD) event in Berlin, accusing them of failing to clearly address possible extremist motives.
Özdemir said the reactions from several Muslim organizations did not sufficiently discuss the alleged anti-LGBTQ motive behind the attack or the possible Islamist background of the suspect. He called on Islamic associations to confront issues such as homophobia and extremism more openly.
The criticism followed an attack near the CSD celebrations in Berlin, where one woman was killed and 31 other people were injured. Authorities said the suspected attacker was a 21-year-old man who had previously been convicted for attempting to join the terrorist organization Islamic State.
Özdemir warned that avoiding difficult discussions about extremist ideologies could create further problems for German society. He argued that all communities, including Muslim organizations, have a responsibility to openly reject violence, hatred, and discrimination.
The remarks have intensified a wider political debate in Germany over how authorities and communities should respond to Islamist threats, integration challenges, and attacks targeting minorities. Supporters of Özdemir say religious organizations must take a stronger stance, while critics warn against placing collective blame on Muslim communities.
The CSD attack has once again raised questions about security measures at public events and the challenges Germany faces in preventing politically or ideologically motivated violence. Officials continue to investigate the background of the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
