Changes to the GSI cable design due to Turkish reactions
Greece and France are proceeding with a review of the route for the GSI electrical cable, which is set to connect Crete with Cyprus. This decision was made following ongoing reactions from Turkey regarding seabed surveys in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The GSI project is considered of strategic importance for the energy interconnection of Europe with the region. However, the presence of Turkish research vessels and disputes over maritime borders have created difficulties in implementing the original design, forcing the involved parties to seek alternative solutions.
Greek and French authorities are now examining a new route for the cable in order to avoid areas where tensions are heightened. Athens' goal is to ensure the safety of the operations and for the project to proceed without further delays or diplomatic incidents.
Despite the challenges, cooperation between the countries remains close, with the aim of completing this important energy corridor. Technical teams are working intensively to finalize the new route, taking into account both geopolitical conditions and the technical specifications of the project.
This development highlights the importance of energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean and the efforts being made to resolve disputes through diplomatic and technical consultations.
