Strengthening the Navy: Greece acquires two Italian frigates
A significant reinforcement for the Hellenic Navy is expected in the coming days, as the agreement for the purchase of two FREMM-class frigates from Italy has been finalized. This is a strategic move aimed at modernizing the fleet and upgrading the country's maritime capabilities.
The official signing of the Implementing Arrangement for the acquisition of the two ships, which belong to the Bergamini class, is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The ceremony will take place in Rome, in the presence of representatives from both states, sealing the defense cooperation between Greece and Italy.
FREMM-class frigates are considered among the most modern and effective surface vessels in the world. They feature advanced radar systems, high-tech weaponry, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, which will provide a significant advantage to the Greek armed forces.
With the completion of this agreement, Greece continues its naval forces upgrade program. The addition of the two new frigates is expected to enhance security in the wider Mediterranean region and contribute to maintaining stability.
