Greece officially free from peste des petits ruminants
A significant development for the country's livestock sector is the recent announcement by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Greece has been officially recognized as a country free from peste des petits ruminants (PPR), a disease that had caused serious problems for producers in the recent past.
This decision is based on the country's compliance with the strict requirements of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code. Following intensive inspections and the implementation of necessary sanitary measures, the competent authorities managed to contain the spread of the virus and safeguard the country's livestock.
The restoration of "disease-free" status by the WOAH is particularly important for the Greek economy. This development allows for the normalization of animal movements, as well as the lifting of restrictions that had been imposed on the export of animal products, thereby strengthening confidence in international markets.
Despite the successful outcome of the matter, livestock farmers and the competent services are urged to remain vigilant. Maintaining high biosecurity standards remains essential to avoid new outbreaks and to protect public health and agricultural production in the future.
