Concern over West Nile virus outbreak in Greece
Health authorities in Greece are on alert as the country faces its worst West Nile virus outbreak in recent years. According to official data published on August 12, a total of 110 cases have been recorded across the territory.
The situation is considered serious, as out of the total number of incidents, 81 individuals have developed complications affecting the central nervous system. The virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which thrive in areas with stagnant water.
Experts from the National Public Health Organization emphasize the importance of prevention to limit the spread. They recommend that citizens use insect repellent, wear clothing that covers the body during evening hours, and install screens on their home windows.
At the same time, local authorities have initiated intensive spraying in many areas of the country to combat mosquitoes. Citizens are urged to be particularly cautious and to contact a doctor immediately if they develop symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, or confusion.
