Cash usage remains strong in Greece and the Eurozone

Despite the rapid digitalization of transactions in recent years, cash remains one of the most popular payment methods for consumers and businesses. According to recent data, the vast majority of small and medium-sized enterprises in Greece continue to accept cash in their daily transactions.

At the Eurozone level, 92% of businesses with physical stores still accept cash, showing a slight increase compared to the previous year. In Greece, this percentage is even higher, as 99% of small and medium-sized enterprises choose to maintain the option of payment with banknotes and coins.

At the same time, there is a significant rise in mobile phone payments. Consumers appear to be increasingly adopting new technologies, combining the convenience of digital wallets with the traditional use of cash. This trend shows that citizens prefer to have alternative solutions for their purchases.

The coexistence of cash with digital payments is expected to continue in the near future. Despite the convenience offered by cards and mobile phones, public trust in cash remains stable, making it an essential tool for the Greek market.
