Meeting in Copenhagen on migration: Greece's position
An important meeting is taking place today in Copenhagen on the management of migration flows in Europe. At the center of the discussions is the proposal to create "return centers" for migrants in countries outside the European Union, an issue that is of great concern to member states.
Greece is represented at the meeting by Thanos Plevris, who is conveying the positions of the Greek government. Our country, as a first-reception state, is seeking a common European solution based on solidarity and the effective control of Europe's external borders.
The discussions are focusing on how the returns of those who are not entitled to asylum will be carried out, while always respecting international law and human rights. Many European Union countries are looking for new ways to reduce irregular arrivals and strengthen security at their borders.
The Greek side emphasizes that the management of migration cannot be the concern only of countries located at Europe's borders. It is essential that there be cooperation among all member states so that the problem can be addressed in a fair and organized manner.
The meeting in Copenhagen is expected to conclude with the issuance of joint conclusions. The results of the talks will play a decisive role in the European Union's future decisions regarding migration policy.
