Short-term rentals and the housing problem in Greece: The position of STAMA
The problem of expensive housing is one of the most significant issues concerning Greek society today. As rental costs continuously rise, many citizens struggle to find affordable homes in large cities, a fact that has sparked an intense debate regarding the role of short-term rentals, such as those through the Airbnb platform.
The Short-Term Rental Property Association of Greece (STAMA) recently addressed this issue. The Association acknowledges that there is indeed a serious problem with high property costs and declares its willingness to cooperate in addressing it, in order to find solutions that will help tenants.
However, STAMA expresses a different view regarding the proposed measures. According to the Association, imposing stricter restrictions on short-term rentals does not guarantee that the number of homes available for long-term rental in the market will increase.
Industry representatives argue that the solution to the housing problem requires a more comprehensive approach. Instead of restrictive measures, they propose dialogue and the design of policies that will boost the supply of housing without unfairly harming an activity that supports tourism and the economy.
The issue remains open, as the government is examining various scenarios for balancing tourism development with the citizens' need for affordable housing. The discussion is expected to continue in the coming months, with all sides seeking a sustainable solution.
