Strengthening the Navy: Agreement for the acquisition of two Italian frigates
A significant reinforcement for the Hellenic Navy is expected to be set in motion in the coming days. According to official information, Greece is proceeding with a final agreement for the purchase of two modern FREMM-class frigates from Italy.
The signing of the relevant Implementing Arrangement is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in Rome. This agreement represents the final stage of a process aimed at modernizing the Greek fleet and upgrading the country's operational capabilities at sea.
Bergamini-class (FREMM) frigates are considered among the most advanced surface vessels globally, featuring modern radar, weaponry, and anti-submarine warfare systems. Their addition is expected to provide greater security and strength to the Greek defense.
With the completion of the signing in Rome, the timeline for the delivery of the ships to the Hellenic Navy will begin. This move is part of the country's broader efforts to strengthen its deterrent power in the wider Mediterranean region.
