Increase in West Nile virus cases in Greece

There is a significant increase in West Nile virus cases in our country, according to the latest data from the National Public Health Organization. In just one week, 75 new cases were recorded, a fact that is causing concern among health authorities.

In total, as of August 26, 232 infections have been recorded throughout Greece. Of the total number of patients, 165 presented with symptoms affecting the central nervous system, such as encephalitis or meningitis, which indicates the severity of the situation.

Unfortunately, the virus has caused the deaths of 19 people so far. According to reports, all the victims were elderly, over 65 years of age, who belong to vulnerable population groups. Experts emphasize that the elderly should be particularly careful during the hours when mosquitoes are active.

The West Nile virus is transmitted mainly through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Health authorities recommend that citizens take preventive measures, such as using insect repellent, installing screens on windows, and avoiding stagnant water near their homes.

The situation is being closely monitored by scientists, who continue to inform the public. Citizens are urged to follow the experts' instructions in order to limit the spread of the virus and protect public health for the remainder of the summer.
